In memoriam Denis McQuail (1935 – 2017)
We received the news that Denis McQuail passed away.
Denis McQuail was a Full Professor at the UvA and the department of Communication from 1977 until his retirement in 1997. He is particularly known for his Mass Communication Theory book, which became one of the most widely used textbooks in communication science worldwide, went through numerous new editions, and was translated into dozens of languages.
During his emeritus status, Denis frequently visited us in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam School of Communication Research ASCoR later created the McQuail Award in honor of his contributions to the field and communication theory. Denis chaired the selection committee until last year.
Denis was a wonderful, insightful, and modest person. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the field and was a sharp analyst. In his teaching, he was open-minded and encouraged creative and systematic thinking. Denis’ scientific authority and inspiration created the conditions for the growth and success of Communication Science and ASCoR at the University of Amsterdam.
We have lost an outstanding scholar, inspirational teacher, and dear colleague.
