Two faculty positions in condensed matter physics with focus on energy and quantum materials

In both teaching and research in physics and astronomy, the VU University Amsterdam (VU) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) are joining forces and collaborating across the board. Consequently, we invite applications for two faculty positions in condensed matter physics, in the areas energy materials, quantum materials or nanomaterials.

We already have substantial research programs in both experimental and theoretical condensed matter and energy physics. We expect these new positions to strengthen these efforts, increase their international visibility and present new opportunities for collaboration in Amsterdam and beyond.

The appointments are available at the level of (Tenure Track) Assistant professor, but Associate professor or Full professor appointments may also be considered, depending on experience and track record.

Research context

The Physics of Energy section of the VU Amsterdam’s Department of Physics and LaserLab Amsterdam has a research focus on solar energy conversion with molecular, nanostructured and semiconducting materials. The UvA’s Institute of Physics conducts experimental condensed matter physics research into quantum matter as well as optoelectronic and functional nanomaterials for energy applications. Both institutes have strong ties to research activities at the nearby research institutes AMOLF and ECN. We are looking for candidates that complement and strengthen any of these activities with their own lines of research.

Job description

You should have a strong track record in condensed matter, with focus on the physics of emerging energy materials, quantum materials or nanomaterials and their application.

We advertise these positions together as we see great opportunities in enhancing the connections between the ongoing condensed matter research activities at both universities, the Institute of Physics, LaserLab Amsterdam and nearby national institutes such as AMOLF and ECN (Energy Center Netherlands), as well as other players in the lively Dutch research scene in energy-related themes.

Active and enthusiastic contribution to teaching at the BSc and MSc level is required, involving activities in basic physics education, as well as research-related specialised courses.



  • have a PhD in Physics and a background in research;
  • have a proven track record in condensed matter research, with the focus lying in one or more of: the physics of emerging energy materials, quantum materials, nanomaterials and their application;
  • are committed to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • are open to fostering collaborations not only within Amsterdam's academic institutes, but also nationally and internationally;
  • display the ability and capacity to develop independent and vigorous programs of funded research;
  • are willing to acquire a basic qualification in teaching (BKO) as demanded by Dutch universities.

Start dates are negotiable. The positions will be filled at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, or in exceptional cases of Full professor, depending on qualifications. The starting salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience and qualifications. It will range from a minimum of €3,475 gross per month up to a maximum of €5,405 gross per month (Assistant professor, salary scale 11-12) or €4,815 gross per month up to a maximum of €6,438 gross per month (Associate professor, salary scale 13-14), based on full-time employment. This is excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Appointments on the basis of a tenure track will initially be on a temporary basis for a period of six years, with up to three assessment interviews during this period. In the case of a tenure track appointment, the position will become permanent after five years with promotion to a higher position if the candidate is successful. Criteria that have to be met include success in research, in acquisition of funds and in education. Details of the criteria will be mutually agreed upon before the appointment.

The  Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the 30% ruling, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
